European shares slip as oil rises; Trump-Xi talks eyed
EWG•European shares fell 0.59% as oil prices rose for a second day, with Brent crude above $100 per barrel. Investors also watched for progress at a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
1. Oil and shares
The pan-European STOXX 600 slipped 0.59% to 636.15 points, with most regional bourses also in negative territory. Oil rose for a second day as U.S.-Iran negotiations faltered, while euro zone bond yields remained near multi-year highs. Energy shares gained 0.84%, among the top sectoral performers.
2. Trump-Xi talks
Investors hoped for progress at a Washington summit between Trump and Xi. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries had agreed to extend their trade truce to January 10; the leaders were expected to discuss issues including Taiwan, Iran and AI.
3. Company moves
Vistry fell 9% after lowering its annual profit expectations, while H&M shares dropped 3% despite a bigger-than-expected rise in June-August operating profit. Shelly Group gained 4.4% after Schneider said it intended to launch a €1.2 billion takeover bid for the Bulgarian smart-device maker.
