European telecom groups mull bid for mobile satellite spectrum
VOD•Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone agreed to explore a joint bid for future mobile satellite services spectrum in Europe. They plan to establish ground infrastructure and coordination functions, but will not invest directly in a satellite constellation.
1. Potential joint bid
The four operators said the effort aims to meet demand for coverage in underserved areas, strengthen public network resilience and protect critical communications. A satellite partner, still to be selected, will provide the constellation. The letter of intent does not replace existing satellite partnerships.
