Evercore sees limited fallout for life insurers from TWG global regulatory scrutiny
XLF•Evercore sees limited sector fallout
Evercore says headlines around billionaire Mark Walter's insurers are unlikely to cause knock on effects across the life insurance sector for broader regulatory reactions.
Market impact could be temporary for peers
"If this remains as orderly process as TWG contends, this still probably represents at least a temporary opportunity for other annuity players to improve market share, while their affiliate insurers lose some share," Evercore analyst Thomas Gallagher said.
Some life insurance stocks CRBG.N, EQH.N, BHF.O, LNC.N had weakened earlier this month, which Evercore said were driven by investor concerns over potential for broader regulatory reactions.
TWG Global says it is working with regulators
Walter's holding company, TWG Global, said on Wednesday it was working with U.S. regulators to address concerns over related-party investments on the books of his insurance companies, adding there had been "no fraud".
Scrutiny centers on private credit investments
His insurance companies are under federal scrutiny over whether certain private credit investments were wrongly categorized as unaffiliated investments, drawing renewed attention to life insurer's exposure to related-party investments.
