Expeditors to Slash 230 IT Jobs, Cutting 15.4% of Tech Staff
EXPD•Expeditors International will reduce 230 U.S. global technology roles across five Washington offices from Aug. 8 to Dec. 31, cutting 15.4% of its 1,498-strong information systems branch. This reversal of its long-standing no-layoff policy affects software developers, QA engineers, project managers and business analysts.
1. Layoff Details
Expeditors will eliminate 230 positions in its U.S. global technology department, with separations beginning Aug. 8 and finalizing by Dec. 31. The cuts span five Washington offices—Seattle (68 layoffs), Federal Way (66), Lynnwood (59), Bellevue and Airway Heights—and represent 15.4% of the 1,498 information systems staff.
2. Policy Reversal
The move reverses Expeditors’ once absolute no-layoff stance, as the corporate history page revised 'no layoff policy' to 'short-term no layoff policy.' This shift signals a strategic adjustment in talent management driven by AI efficiency gains within its technology operations.
3. Impact and Company Response
Affected roles include software developers, QA engineers, project managers and business analysts. Expeditors stated the action won’t lead to outsourcing or relocations, and that impacted employees will retain pay and benefits through termination.
