Fed's reduced guidance leaves markets facing uncertainty, AGF says
TLT•AGF says shorter Fed policy statements and omitted forward guidance leave markets facing uncertainty. The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points on September 16, held them steady on October 28 and plans fewer rate-setting meetings in 2027 and 2028.
1. Fed communication changes
The Federal Reserve began issuing shorter policy statements and omitting forward guidance on June 15, 2026, giving policymakers more flexibility to respond to changing conditions. Markets absorbed a 25-basis-point rate increase on September 16, the first hike in more than three years, without disruption. The Fed held rates steady on October 28 and announced seven rate-setting meetings in 2027, down from eight, and six in 2028. AGF says a potential December hike could test the communication strategy, with the timing of further tightening less clear than in September.
