Fernandes questions United's tactics after Como hammering
MANU•Bruno Fernandes questioned Manchester United's tactics and mentality after its 4–1 Champions League loss at Como, which left the club winless in seven matches. Manager Michael Carrick called the performance unacceptable and said responsibility stopped with him.
1. Fernandes questions tactics
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said the team failed to apply enough pressure and adopted a “mood of defeat” after Como scored in the second minute of Wednesday's 4–1 Champions League win. Joshua Zirkzee scored a stoppage-time consolation goal for United.
2. Carrick accepts responsibility
Fernandes said the coaching staff had chosen not to press man-to-man, adding that United sometimes needed to be braver and press high. Asked whether that was criticism of Carrick's tactics, he said it was for the manager and staff to assess.
3. United's poor run
Carrick called the performance unacceptable, said United had failed to bring the motivation, purpose and intensity required, and apologized. United have three points from their opening three Champions League matches and next host AS Roma in the competition.
