Firefly Aerospace Delivers Lockheed Martin Payload and Tests Block II Upgrades on Flight 7

FLYFLY

Firefly Aerospace launched Alpha Flight 7 “Stairway to Seven” on March 11 from Vandenberg, delivering a demonstrator payload to Lockheed Martin. The mission validated a stage-two engine relight, in-house avionics suite and enhanced thermal protection ahead of the full Alpha Block II upgrade on Flight 8.

1. Successful Alpha Flight 7 Launch

On March 11, Firefly’s Alpha Flight 7 “Stairway to Seven” mission lifted off from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg, completing orbital insertion and delivering a demonstrator payload to Lockheed Martin. All mission objectives were met without anomalies, marking a key operational achievement.

2. Block II Upgrade Validation

The flight successfully tested a stage-two engine relight and validated new in-house avionics and an enhanced thermal protection system developed for the Block II configuration. These demonstrations confirm improvements in system resiliency, quality and reliability ahead of full rollout.

3. Upcoming Flight 8 Full Block II

Firefly is now finalizing upgrades for Alpha Flight 8’s full Block II configuration, which features a 7-foot length extension, consolidated batteries and avionics, improved thermal shielding and stronger automated carbon composite structures. Flight 8 aims to deliver enhanced manufacturability and operational reliability.
