FirstEnergy Files 2027 Auction-Based Supply Plan and Launches $11.1M EV Bus Pilot

FEFE

FirstEnergy filed a Pennsylvania Default Service Plan to buy supply via competitive auctions from June 1, 2027 and cap rate risks on roughly 60% of customer bills. Potomac Edison secured PUC approval for an $11.1 million pilot subsidizing 28 electric school buses and testing V2G grid support.

1. Record Tree-Planting Milestone Strengthens Community Engagement

In 2025, FirstEnergy’s Green Teams—made up of nearly 800 employee volunteers—planted over 30,000 trees across its six-state service territory, exceeding the company’s annual target by 20%. Volunteers logged 3,438 hours at 151 distinct events, with more than half held in underserved neighborhoods. Since the initiative’s launch in 2020, FirstEnergy has planted a cumulative 131,000 trees in partnership with parks, schools and local nonprofits. State-level breakdowns include almost 14,000 trees planted by 440 employees at 70 events in Ohio; over 6,000 trees by 62 employees at 16 events in Pennsylvania; more than 7,000 trees by 227 employees at 50 events in West Virginia and Maryland; and upwards of 2,000 trees by 68 employees at 15 events in New Jersey. The program also delivered 26 community gardens totaling 113,289 square feet, bolstering pollinator habitats and local food resilience.

2. 2026 Targets and Strategic Environmental Benefits

Building on its environmental track record, FirstEnergy has set a 2026 goal of planting at least 26,000 trees, focusing on native species such as red maple, hickory, oak and dogwood. These varieties were selected for their capacity to enhance watershed health, provide natural shade, and yield fruit for schools and food banks. The initiative aligns with FirstEnergy’s broader corporate responsibility strategy, which serves over six million customers and operates approximately 24,000 miles of transmission lines across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York. By fostering healthier urban and rural landscapes, the company anticipates improved community relations, strengthened regulatory partnerships and enhanced long-term environmental resilience that may contribute to greater stakeholder confidence and support for future infrastructure investments.
