Florida asks court to force Meta to change Facebook, Instagram for teens
META•Florida asked a judge to require Meta to remove users under 14 from Facebook and Instagram, limit teens to two hours daily across its apps and disable features including autoplay and infinite scroll while the state’s lawsuit proceeds.
1. Florida seeks injunction
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a Pasco County judge for a temporary injunction requiring Meta to remove users under 14 from its platforms in the state, limit teens to two hours a day across its apps and turn off features such as autoplay and infinite scroll. The filing seeks immediate implementation while the lawsuit moves forward.
2. State rejected settlement
Florida opted out of an August settlement in which Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion and make changes for teen users after resolving claims with 48 other states and Washington, D.C. Meta denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle.
3. Broader restrictions sought
Florida’s requested changes go further than the settlement terms, including cutting off teens’ messaging after they reach their time limits and barring ads to them. The state’s lawsuit accuses Meta of knowingly engineering its platforms to be addictive for young users and misleading consumers about safety.
