Fonterra Adopts Amcor’s Recycle-Ready Film, Diverts 270 Tonnes of Waste

AMCRAMCR

Amcor’s AmPrima single-material polyethylene film adopted by Fonterra Oceania for Perfect Italiano shredded cheese in Australia meets recycling requirements and carries the ARL Check Locally logo. The switch from PET/PVDC will remove 270 tonnes of non-recyclable material annually while maintaining food safety and pack performance.

1. Fonterra Adoption of AmPrima Film

Fonterra Oceania has transitioned its Perfect Italiano shredded cheese packaging in Australia to Amcor’s AmPrima recycle-ready film. The adoption spans both retail and foodservice channels and involves collaboration between Amcor’s Asia Pacific and North America teams to meet Australasian soft plastics recycling standards.

2. Sustainability Impact and Waste Reduction

The new packaging carries the Australasian Recycling Label’s Check Locally logo and is projected to divert an estimated 270 tonnes of non-recyclable material from the Australian market each year. This change supports Fonterra’s packaging sustainability goals while enabling clearer recycling decisions for consumers.

3. Technical Performance and Operational Benefits

AmPrima replaces multi-material PET or PVDC structures with a single polyethylene film that delivers high barrier performance, reliable sealing, food safety compliance, and compatibility with high-speed packing lines. Customers can implement the new film without altering existing operations or machinery.

4. Additional Recent Packaging Wins

Earlier this month, Amcor secured a contract to supply bottles and flexible tubes for Fragrances of Ireland’s new haircare range under the Inis the Energy of the Sea brand, extending its footprint in sustainable packaging solutions.
