Ford Imported More U.S. Vehicles Than BMW; Recalls 140,201 Rangers Over Fire Risk
Ford imported more vehicles into the U.S. in 2025 than BMW, but its import volume remained a fraction of General Motors and Toyota and was partly reduced by an Oakville plant retooling. It also recalled 140,201 Ranger trucks over damaged A-pillar wiring that risks electrical shorts and fires.
1. U.S. Vehicle Imports and Tariffs
In 2025, Ford imported more vehicles into the U.S. than BMW but remained well below General Motors and Toyota in import volume. Tariffs on imported vehicles spurred some automakers to curb imports, while Ford’s Oakville, Ontario plant paused production for F-Series Super Duty retooling, trimming its cross-border shipments.
2. Ranger Recall for Wiring Defect
Ford is recalling 140,201 Ranger trucks after regulators flagged damaged sun visor or headliner wiring harnesses in the A-pillar that can short and spark fires. Dealers will inspect the wiring, update body control module software and replace any compromised harnesses to resolve the issue.
3. Financial and Operational Implications
The combination of shifted import patterns and a large safety recall could raise Ford’s production and repair costs, potentially pressuring margins. The automaker’s emphasis on higher U.S. assembly content and selective price adjustments on imported models aims to offset tariff and recall expense impacts.
