Ford Unveils $30,000 UEV Platform with Level 3 BlueCruise by 2028
Ford is developing a new UEV platform priced at $30,000 with Level 3 hands-off BlueCruise autonomy, targeting highway-ready vehicles by 2028. The push aims to make advanced driver-assist features more affordable and accelerate Ford’s transition into mass-market autonomous segments.
1. Stock Dips While Market Gains
Ford Motor Company shares closed at 14.2 on the most recent trading day, marking a 1.39% decline from the prior session’s settlement. This underperformance contrasted with a broader market rally, where the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each posted gains in excess of 0.5%. Trading volume in Ford shares was above its 30-day average, indicating elevated investor activity as market participants weighed sector rotation away from traditional automakers.
2. $19.5B EV Charge and Hybrid Focus
In December, Ford recorded a 19.5 billion charge primarily to cancel unprofitable EV programs and retool facilities for alternative powertrains. The company converted its Tennessee truck plant from pure electric pickup production back to gasoline models and reshaped battery allocations toward stationary energy storage. This pivot follows weaker‐than‐expected pure EV demand, leading Ford to emphasize hybrids. In the fourth quarter, Ford’s hybrid variants, including the Escape Hybrid and F-150 PowerBoost V6, accounted for more than 25% of its total U.S. retail mix, outpacing full battery EVs by roughly 3 percentage points.
3. 2030 Powertrain Mix Targets
Ford has set a goal for 50% of global volume to consist of hybrids, extended-range EVs or full battery EVs by 2030, up from 17% in 2025. This balanced strategy aims to capture consumer preference for flexible powertrains amid concerns over charging infrastructure and range anxiety. By comparison, pure EVs represent just 7% of Ford’s lineup today. Management projects that hybrids will deliver mid-single-digit percentage point improvements to overall operating margin through 2030, reducing capital intensity while maintaining revenue growth in North America and Europe.
4. Level 3 Autonomy Roadmap
Ford is targeting a 2028 launch of a 30,000 UEV platform equipped with Level 3 BlueCruise eyes-off highway autonomy. The company plans to invest approximately 3 billion in R&D for this platform over the next five years, leveraging its silicon carbide battery partnerships and advanced driver-assist technology. Ford expects this affordable autonomous highway offering to open new revenue streams via subscription services, projecting 500,000 BlueCruise subscriptions by 2030 and incremental annual recurring revenue of 600 million.
