Fortescue Charters 12 Ammonia-Capable 210,000 DWT Newcastlemax Vessels
CMBT•CMB.TECH and Fortescue have agreed that Fortescue will charter 12 Newcastlemax vessels (210,000 dwt) from Bocimar, with three dual-fuel ammonia engines to enter service by end-2026 and nine ammonia-ready units for future conversion. If powered by green ammonia, the fleet could cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 250,000 tonnes annually.
1. Charter Agreement Details
Under the agreement, Fortescue will charter up to 12 Newcastlemax vessels (210,000 dwt) from CMB.TECH’s Bocimar division, with three units equipped with dual-fuel ammonia engines scheduled for delivery by end-2026 and nine additional vessels delivered ammonia-ready for later conversion.
2. Emissions Reduction Impact
If all 12 vessels operate on green ammonia, the combined fleet could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 250,000 tonnes per year compared with conventional marine fuels, marking a material step in decarbonisation efforts.
3. Partnership and Strategic Implications
This milestone pact builds on a partnership of over two decades between CMB.TECH and Fortescue, signaling a commitment to commercial-scale adoption of ammonia fuel and reinforcing both companies’ leadership in zero-emission shipping solutions.
4. CMB.TECH Fleet Profile
CMB.TECH operates a diversified fleet of about 250 vessels, including dry bulk, tankers, containers and offshore energy ships, and offers hydrogen and ammonia fuel supply through its own production and third-party sources, positioning it as a key player in maritime decarbonisation.
