Freddie Mac: 30-year fixed mortgage rate averages 7.28% in latest PMMS survey
TLT•Freddie Mac’s weekly survey showed the 30-year fixed mortgage rate averaging 7.28% as of Oct. 1, 2026, up from 7.03% the prior week and 6.34% a year earlier. The 15-year rate averaged 6.60%.
1. Mortgage rates rise
The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average rose to 7.28% as of Oct. 1, 2026, from 7.03% the previous week; it was 6.34% a year earlier. The 15-year average increased to 6.60% from 6.42% the prior week, compared with 5.55% a year earlier. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater pointed to favorable economic conditions as support for the housing market despite higher rates.
