Freightos Sees $1,000 FEU Spike in Ocean Container Rates From June 1
CRGO•Freightos reports ocean container rates on major east-west lanes surged by at least $1,000 per forty-foot equivalent unit after June 1 surcharges, lifting spot rates to roughly $3,200/FEU West Coast and $5,000/FEU East Coast. Carriers cite Strait of Hormuz closures and early peak-season demand for the hikes.
1. Rate Surge Details
On June 1, carriers implemented general rate increases and peak-season surcharges that lifted spot rates by at least $1,000 per FEU, bringing average costs to around $3,200/FEU for West Coast deliveries and $5,000/FEU to the East Coast. Daily rates have spiked up to $1,800 per FEU on key ex-Asia lanes so far.
2. Geopolitical and Seasonal Drivers
The ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sustained fuel-related surcharges and capacity constraints, while early peak-season ordering has tightened space allocations. Conflict-related disruptions, including vessel strikes, and U.S. regulatory changes for trucker hours have compounded supply-chain pressure.
3. Implications for Freightos and Carriers
Freightos’ business may see increased booking fees and higher average transaction values as spot rates climb. Major lines such as CMA CGM and Maersk plan further mid-June surcharges that could sustain elevated rates through the holiday shipping cycle.
