French telecom operators' emissions rise 1% in 2024, Bouygues Telecom analysis shows
XLC•France's four largest telecom operators emitted 401,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2024, up 1% from a year earlier. Mobile network electricity use rose 4%, while fixed local access network use fell 16%.
1. Emissions and energy use
France's four largest telecom operators emitted 401,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent in 2024, a 1% increase from 2023. Mobile network electricity consumption rose 4%, while fixed local access network consumption fell 16% as fiber replaced copper. Data center electricity consumption increased 12%, and associated greenhouse gas emissions rose 23%, partly reflecting a more carbon-intensive electricity mix.
2. Decarbonization priorities
The analysis identifies lower-carbon construction, energy savings and equipment reuse as priorities. Extending equipment lifespans could reduce replacement needs, while optimized tower foundations could cut concrete volumes by about 30%.
