From 'cockroach' post to protest leader: India's Dipke tests Modi government
INDA•Police detained political strategist Abhijit Dipke ahead of a rally seeking the resignation of India's election chief over voter-roll changes that critics say removed about 130 million voters from a draft roll.
1. Detained before rally
Police detained Abhijit Dipke, 31, after his aircraft landed in New Delhi ahead of a rally demanding the resignation of election commission chief Gyanesh Kumar. Dipke had called for the protest over accusations of voter-list manipulation; the election panel said the flagged entries were part of a draft revision and that wrongly removed voters could enroll again.
2. Viral post fueled movement
Dipke rose to prominence after a May social media post asking, “What if all cockroaches come together?” spawned the satirical “Cockroach Janta Party” and a youth protest movement. The movement helped drive demonstrations over a medical entrance exam paper leak affecting about 2 million candidates and sustained pressure that culminated in education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on July 25.
3. Protests target election chief
Dipke and two senior group leaders were detained after he traveled to the capital, where authorities imposed tight protest restrictions and called in thousands of security forces. The group returned to the streets after a newspaper report said two of Kumar’s deputies had raised concerns about voter-roll revisions, registration procedures and the commission’s digital systems; the poll body said differing views were normal during internal deliberations.
