Gemini’s market share rose from 5% to over 21% in 2025, and Apple chose it to power Siri. Alphabet’s quantum team unveiled a Willow chip in 2024 that cuts errors exponentially and outperformed top supercomputers.

1. Diverse AI and Cloud Strength

Alphabet’s AI initiatives and established cloud operations position GOOGL as a lower-risk way to tap the artificial-intelligence boom. Its Gemini chatbot grew from 5% to 18% of the global AI-chat market in 2025, according to Similarweb, while rival ChatGPT fell from 87% to 68%. Google Cloud’s sales backlog swelled to $155 billion at the end of Q3, up 46% quarter-over-quarter, driven by hyperscaler demand for AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, core Search and YouTube advertising—high-margin businesses accounting for over 70% of revenue—provide steady cash flow to underwrite continued AI investment.

2. Social Media Regulation Challenges

Alphabet’s YouTube faces compliance costs under new youth-protection laws abroad. Australia’s Online Safety Amendment Act, effective December 10, 2025, requires age verification on YouTube and other platforms or fines up to 49.5 million AUD per violation. Google implemented digital-ID checks for users under 16 and warned that noncompliance could trigger penalties. Similar proposals are under consideration in the U.K., France and Germany, raising the prospect of sizable one-time implementation expenses and ongoing moderation costs.

3. Quantum Computing Breakthroughs

Alphabet is making concrete strides toward commercial quantum computing. Its in-house “Willow” chip demonstrated exponential error-rate reduction as systems scale, and in late 2025 executed a verifiable quantum algorithm that outperformed the world’s top classical supercomputer on the same task. These milestones mark Alphabet as one of the few publicly traded companies with both deep-pocketed core businesses and a path to future revenue from quantum-accelerated applications.
