General Motors has confirmed it will cease production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas, where the model is currently built. The Bolt, GM’s most affordable electric vehicle at a retail price of $29,990, will end its run as part of a broader facility realignment. Starting mid-2027, the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox will transfer from Mexico to Fairfax, and in 2028 the next-generation Buick Envision will shift from China to the same Kansas plant. GM spokespersons have characterized the Bolt as always intended to be a limited-run model, paving the way for those two nameplates to occupy Fairfax’s production lines once Bolt assembly winds down.

This production reshuffle follows a challenging period for GM’s electric-vehicle division, which incurred a $6 billion charge in 2025 related to battery recalls and restructuring costs, on top of a prior $1.6 billion write-down. To streamline its EV operations, GM has laid off more than 3,400 employees across multiple U.S. assembly and battery plants since late 2024. Management has indicated that these measures, though painful, are necessary to align capacity with demand and to preserve capital for next-generation EV programs slated to begin in the latter half of the decade.

In parallel with its manufacturing changes, GM relocated its corporate headquarters from Detroit’s Renaissance Center to a newly constructed campus downtown. CEO Mary Barra has emphasized that the move is designed to foster closer collaboration across engineering, design and executive teams as the company accelerates its transition to electric vehicles and autonomous technologies. Barra has reiterated GM’s long-term commitment to invest in affordable EVs and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, framing the Kansas production shifts and HQ relocation as key steps in that broader transformation.
