Georgia Power Rate Cut to Save Residential Customers $50 Annually with $285M Savings
SO•Georgia PSC approved rate cuts effective next month, giving typical residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours monthly savings of $4.04 ($50 annually) and generating $285 million in total annual savings. It resolves Fuel Cost Recovery (Docket 56765) and Storm Cost Recovery (Docket 44280) cases.
1. Georgia PSC Approves Rate Reduction
The Georgia Public Service Commission approved a plan that lowers overall rates starting next month, delivering $4.04 monthly or $50 annual savings for a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The change yields approximately $285 million in total annual savings for Georgia Power customers.
2. Recovery Cases and Stipulated Agreement
This decision settles the Fuel Cost Recovery (Docket 56765) and Storm Cost Recovery (Docket 44280) cases originally filed in February. The rate reduction follows a stipulated agreement between Georgia Power and PSC Public Interest Advocacy staff to recover fuel costs and storm restoration expenses, including costs from Hurricane Helene in 2024.
3. Impact on Customers and Future Outlook
The rate revision builds on a base rate freeze enabled by new large-load customers spreading fixed costs across a broader customer base. Georgia Power also commits to delivering $102 in annual savings for typical residential customers by 2029 as continued customer growth supports affordable energy pricing.
