Germany plans to double AI data centre capacity and quadruple data processing output by 2030, backed by municipal tax incentives and expedited approvals. Amazon, among top spenders on German infrastructure alongside Microsoft and Google, stands to gain from dedicated development land and shifted local business-tax revenues.

1. Government Targets AI Infrastructure Expansion

Germany’s digital ministry unveiled a strategy to increase domestic AI data centre capacity from 530MW at year-end to at least 1,060MW and to boost AI-specific data processing capabilities fourfold by 2030, aiming to narrow the gap with US and Chinese peers.

2. Incentives to Spur Investment

Key measures include redirecting municipal business taxes to host communities rather than corporate headquarters, allocating land plots for new centres, accelerating regulatory reviews and fostering collaboration across the AI supply chain to attract European and global investors.

3. Implications for Amazon Web Services

Amazon is among the largest investors in German data infrastructure; the plan’s tax shifts and land designations could lower deployment costs and speed site approvals, potentially enhancing AWS’s regional growth and competitive positioning.
