Ghana moves to standardise mining pay amid local-content drive
XLB•Ghana has ordered its mining regulator to standardise pay and employment conditions as mining operations shift from multinational companies to local contractors. The regulator must submit implementation proposals by November 30.
1. Pay rules for mining
Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources instructed the Minerals Commission to ensure workers do not lose wages, benefits or employment conditions because of the shift from owner mining to contract mining. The regulator must harmonise pay and conditions across the mining value chain, introduce a contractor classification system based on capacity and submit implementation proposals by November 30. The ministry said it would have “zero tolerance” for unfair labour practices, cartelisation, bid-rigging and fronting arrangements.
