GM and Lockheed Plan to Boost Munitions Output, Backed by $9B Investment
GM•General Motors and Lockheed Martin are in talks to leverage GM Defense’s high-rate manufacturing and supply chain to help triple US munitions output under a Department of War initiative. Lockheed has already pledged $9 billion in capital and infrastructure investments across 20 facilities to close the weapons stockpile gap.

General Motors’ defense unit and Lockheed Martin have opened discussions to collaborate on manufacturing munitions components, responding to a Department of War call to dramatically scale weapons production.
2. Government Initiative and Investment
The Department of War aims to triple or quadruple munitions output in coming years to replenish stockpiles depleted by global conflicts. Lockheed has committed $9 billion toward capital and infrastructure across 20 facilities to support this ramp-up.
3. Manufacturing Capabilities and Focus
GM Defense’s expertise in high-rate production and its established supply chain are under review for potential use in munitions parts manufacturing. Specific plant involvement and project costs remain under evaluation.
4. Broader Defense Portfolio
Since its 2017 launch, GM Defense has secured contracts with the U.S. Army, Department of State, NASA’s lunar program and the Canadian government, producing vehicles like the Suburban Shield and the Infantry Squad Vehicle.
