General Motors will restart production of the refreshed Chevrolet Bolt at its idle Fairfax Assembly Plant to fill capacity until Equinox output begins in mid-2027, leveraging existing EV components to cut costs. GM secured a $50 million prepayment from MP Materials for magnetic supplies, strengthening its EV magnet sourcing.

1. Chevrolet Bolt Production Restart

General Motors has decided to restart production of a refreshed Chevrolet Bolt at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas. The plant, which ceased Malibu production two years ago and will not begin Equinox output until mid-2027, provides idle capacity that GM plans to utilize. By leveraging existing EV-specific parts and incremental improvements rather than a new platform, GM aims to reduce development costs and deliver a subcompact EV that can drive sales in a cautious EV market.

2. MP Materials Magnet Supply Deal

As part of its EV supply chain strategy, GM secured a final $50 million prepayment from MP Materials for magnetic supplies under its long-term supply agreement. The payment marks the start of commercial-scale magnet sourcing from MP’s Independence facility and underscores GM’s push to secure domestic rare earth inputs. This deal enhances GM’s ability to manage costs and supply risks for its expanding electric vehicle lineup.
