GM to End Silverado 4500–6500HD Production as Partner Sells Ohio Plant
General Motors will end production of Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD trucks with International Motors when the Sept. 30, 2026 contract expires, as partner plans to sell its Springfield, Ohio assembly plant to a Canadian defense company. GM will still build key Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Cutaway vans at Wentzville Assembly.
1. Ending of Silverado Heavy-Duty Contract
GM confirmed that its venture with International Motors to produce Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD models will conclude when the current agreement lapses on Sept. 30, 2026, citing softer demand for diesel-powered medium-duty trucks.
2. Assembly Plant Sale
International Motors plans to sell its Springfield, Ohio assembly facility to a Canadian defense firm, prompting GM’s decision not to renew the contract and relinquish dedicated production at that location.
3. Continued Van Production and Future Plans
Despite the cut to large Silverado variants, GM will maintain production of key Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Cutaway van models at its Wentzville Assembly plant and is evaluating future options for its medium-duty lineup.
