GM’s pint-sized Bolt EV gets smaller production run
GM•GM is on pace to build about 35,000 Chevrolet Bolts before production ends in the first quarter of next year, down from an original plan of around 150,000, a union official said. GM has called the model a limited run but has not said when it will be discontinued.
1. Production scaled back
General Motors is building about 75% fewer Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles than originally planned, a United Auto Workers local official said. The Kansas City-area plant is now on pace to produce about 35,000 before Bolt production ends in the first quarter of next year, compared with an original plan for around 150,000. The union estimate is based on the plant’s daily production volume, not a figure provided by GM.
2. Bolt sales and costs
The new Bolt went on sale early this year with a starting price of $27,600. GM sold 4,224 Bolts through August and has described the vehicle as a limited-run model, without specifying when it will be discontinued. GM said it continuously evaluates market dynamics and customer demand. It has recorded $10.9 billion in EV-related charges since the second quarter of 2025.
3. Kansas plant plans
Lower Bolt production delayed the return of a second shift at the Kansas City-area factory, according to a memo to workers from a GM plant director. Nearly 1,000 employees are on indefinite layoff, the union official said. GM plans to start building the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox at the plant next year and is shifting Buick Envision production there from China.
