Google, Accel India Accelerator Rejects 70% AI Wrappers, Backs Five Startups with $2M Funding
Google and Accel’s Atoms India AI accelerator reviewed 4,000 applications and selected five startups, excluding superficial AI wrappers that made up 70% of submissions. Each receives up to $2 million in funding plus $350,000 in Google Cloud credits to develop new AI products and provide model performance feedback.
1. Program Launch and Objectives
The Atoms India AI accelerator was announced in November to back early-stage startups building AI products linked to the Indian market. It is run jointly by Google’s AI Futures Fund and Accel India, aiming to foster novel AI workflows beyond simple model wrappers.
2. Application and Selection Metrics
The program received over 4,000 applications, roughly 70% of which were deemed superficial "wrapper" projects layering AI onto existing software. About 62% of submissions focused on productivity tools and 13% on software development and coding, leaving limited diversity in use cases.
3. Funding and Credit Package
Five startups were chosen for the latest cohort and will split up to $2 million in combined funding from Accel and Google, alongside $350,000 in Google Cloud and AI compute credits per company. There is no requirement to use Google’s models exclusively, allowing startups to combine multiple AI frameworks.
4. Feedback Loop Strategy
Selected companies will channel real-world performance data back to Google’s model development teams, creating a flywheel of startup experimentation and AI model improvement. This mechanism is designed to refine future DeepMind offerings and strengthen Google’s competitive position in enterprise AI.
