Google Commits $1.5B to Expand Alabama Data Center, Covers 100% Power Costs
Google will invest $1.5 billion by 2027 to expand its Jackson County, Alabama data center on the former Widows Creek coal site, bringing over 1,000 contract workers. The expansion secures 300 MW of power capacity, covers 100% of operational energy costs and allocates $2.55 million to local energy efficiency and STEM programs.
1. Expansion Details
Google plans to invest $1.5 billion through 2026–27 to expand its existing data center campus in Jackson County, Alabama, on the former Widows Creek coal plant site. The project will bring over 1,000 contract workers to the region and raises Google's total local investment above $2 billion.
2. Energy Commitments
The expansion includes contracts for more than 300 MW of new generation capacity in the Tennessee Valley, and Google has pledged to cover 100% of the power it uses and all direct infrastructure costs. A 2025 partnership will deliver up to 50 MW of advanced nuclear power to support data center operations.
3. Community Investments
Google will commit $2.55 million to local initiatives, including a $2 million Energy Impact Fund for weatherization and energy efficiency upgrades at schools and income-qualified homes, and $550,000 for STEM kits and robotics programs for grades 4 through 8 in Jackson County schools.
