Google DeepMind's Hassabis calls AI hacks 'early warning shots'
Demis Hassabis said recent AI-agent hacks were “early warning shots” and called for international standards to improve safety without stifling innovation. Microsoft President Brad Smith said 2026 had been a “sobering year” and called for sensible AI safety laws and rules.
1. Warnings over AI security
Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis said recent hacking incidents involving AI agents were “early warning shots” and warned that major incidents could occur in the next year or two if companies and governments do not do more to secure the systems. He said best practices used in fields such as biology and the nuclear sector could help protect critical systems.
2. Calls for standards and laws
Hassabis said an international standards body would eventually be needed, with a proportionate, adaptable certification process that does not stifle innovation. Microsoft President Brad Smith called 2026 a “sobering year” and said new AI safety laws and rules were urgently needed to help safety catch up with innovation.
