Google Guides $75 Billion Capex After Cloud Demand Outpaces Capacity
On its February and April 2025 earnings calls, Google revealed Cloud demand surpassed available capacity, prompting management to prepare for expanded infrastructure. The company guided investors to expect $75 billion in capital expenditures for 2025 as AI service usage grew 40x for Gemini API and 20x for Vertex AI.
1. Supply Bottleneck Signals
On its February and April 2025 earnings calls, Google executives highlighted that Cloud demand had outstripped existing capacity. The finance chief disclosed the company “exited the year with more demand than available capacity,” underscoring a supply bottleneck that could throttle growth without significant investment.
2. $75 Billion Infrastructure Plan
To alleviate capacity constraints, management guided for approximately $75 billion in capital expenditures for 2025, dedicated largely to data center expansion and network upgrades. This level of spending marked one of the largest infrastructure investment plans in Google’s history and reflected confidence in sustained demand for AI and Cloud services.
3. AI Usage Surge and Financial Health
Usage metrics showed calls to the Gemini API surged nearly 40x over six months and Vertex AI platform usage rose 20x during 2024. Meanwhile, revenue growth accelerated to 13.9% in 2024 and net margin reached a three-year peak of 28.6%, demonstrating robust financial performance ahead of the capacity expansion.
