Google links 8,000km Telstra fiber network and faces UK under-16 media ban
Google will leverage Telstra’s Aura network—8,000km of planned 14,000km linking Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney—and access Tabua, Proa and Bulikula subsea cables to boost capacity for growing AI data traffic. UK Prime Minister plans to ban harmful social media for under-16s, backed by 94% public support, potentially limiting Google’s user base.
1. Telstra-Google Infrastructure Alliance
Google and Telstra have agreed to integrate their terrestrial and subsea networks, with Google using over 8,000km of Telstra’s Aura fiber linking major Australian cities and Telstra gaining access to Google’s Pacific Connect and Australia Connect subsea cable systems (Tabua, Proa and Bulikula).
2. Network Capacity and AI Demand
The partnership aims to enhance network resilience, capacity and security to handle surging AI and cloud workloads, positioning both companies to support growing data volumes and digital services across the Indo-Pacific.
3. Proposed UK Under-16s Social Media Ban
UK leadership is set to prohibit under-16s from accessing harmful social media platforms, reflecting 94% public backing for stricter online safety and targeting content that may harm minors’ mental health and privacy.
4. Impact on Google’s User Base and Revenue
If enforced, the ban could shrink active user counts in a major market and reduce advertising reach, while the infrastructure deal could open new enterprise revenue streams through enhanced cloud and networking services.
