Google quantum advance brings Bitcoin security threat closer, Bitrue says
Google's Willow quantum breakthrough narrowed the timeline for threats to Bitcoin security, though current technology cannot break its cryptography. A March 2026 Google Quantum AI white paper estimated that breaking Bitcoin's elliptic curve cryptography would require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits.
1. Quantum error reduction
Magic state cultivation reduced quantum errors 40-fold and achieved 99.99% logical fidelity for T-states. The experiment used at most 54 of Willow's 105 qubits, and breaking Bitcoin would require substantially lower error rates.
