Google Secures 35M-Gallon SAF Supply With American Airlines, Cutting 300K Tons CO₂
Google has inked a three-year, 35 million-gallon sustainable aviation fuel agreement with American Airlines, supplying SAF produced from waste feedstocks at Chicago O’Hare. This deal is projected to cut nearly 300,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions and generates book-and-claim environmental credits for Google’s corporate travel.
1. Three-Year SAF Agreement
Google has entered a three-year agreement to supply 35 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel to American Airlines. The SAF will be produced from waste feedstocks such as used cooking oil, plant oils and agricultural waste, and delivered through existing infrastructure at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
2. Environmental Benefits
The agreement is set to reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared with traditional jet fuel, cutting nearly 300,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions over its term. Google will receive book-and-claim environmental credits through the SAFc Registry to offset its corporate air travel footprint.
3. Strategic Implications
This supply deal advances Google’s decarbonization and ESG objectives by securing a long-term SAF source and demonstrating corporate leadership in sustainable aviation. It also supports American Airlines’ fuel-cost management and sustainability targets amid ongoing industry pressure to lower carbon intensity.
