Greece’s parliament approved legislation banning social media use by children under 15. The ban comes into force on January 1, 2027, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said platforms have 2-1/2 months to devise a way to verify users’ ages while protecting their privacy.
Greece is among seven European Union countries seeking an age verification solution with the European Commission. The government said it is standing by parents to help curb “endless scrolling,” which it says deprives children of sleep, concentration and time with friends. Australia passed legislation to curb minors’ social media use last year, while a similar French law was struck down by the country’s Constitutional Council in August.
