Greer says EU loan to Airbus threatens trade truce on large aircraft financing
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer warned the EU that a $3.4 billion European Investment Bank loan to Airbus threatens a transatlantic trade truce and a deal on financing large civil aircraft projects.
1. Loan details sought
Greer said his office had received no details about the loan, made in June, despite ongoing requests. Boeing had asked the U.S. government in July to press for transparency on the financing, which came amid speculation that Airbus would use the funds to develop a new aircraft model.
2. Trade deal concerns
Greer said the situation created substantial uncertainty for transatlantic aerospace trade. He called for it to be resolved quickly to ensure market-driven production and avoid violating the terms of the large civil aircraft deal.
