Hamilton recalls Schumacher after first Ferrari pole, hails Antonelli
RACE•Lewis Hamilton took his first pole position for Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix, his 105th career pole and first since 2023. He praised Kimi Antonelli, who starts fourth and could clinch the championship on Sunday.
1. Hamilton takes Ferrari pole
Hamilton’s pole at Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez was his first for Ferrari and his first since July 2023, excluding sprint races. At 41, he became the oldest pole-sitter since Mario Andretti in 1982. Hamilton said the achievement reminded him of watching Michael Schumacher take poles and wins for Ferrari.
2. Antonelli nears title
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli starts fourth and needs to finish in the top nine to become champion at 20. Hamilton is 124 points behind, with 100 points available after Mexico, while Mercedes’ George Russell is 123 points behind. Hamilton praised Antonelli’s future and said he hoped they would have battles in the years ahead.
