Hawaiian Electric seeks bids for renewable power, energy storage to support Hawaii 2045 clean-energy goal

Hawaiian Electric outlined an expedited clean-energy procurement plan to add renewables, battery storage, and firm generation across Oahu, Hawaii Island, and Maui as it targets Hawaii’s 100% renewable power mandate by 2045.

The utility submitted an Integrated Grid Planning request for proposals seeking nearly 1,650 GWh of variable renewable energy, 465 MW of grid-forming resources, and 111 MW of firm capacity, with projects slated to enter service in 2031-2034.

It asked regulators to consider expanding the Oahu firm-generation procurement by up to 500 MW to support earlier retirement of aging oil-fired plants.

Hawaiian Electric said it remains open to liquefied natural gas as a potential fuel option, subject to review through the state’s regulatory process.
