HII’s NNS Charleston Operations, acquired in January 2025, delivered its first unit within 40 days and has surpassed 2025 production targets at its 480,000 sq ft facility. Meanwhile, Ingalls Shipbuilding completed builder’s sea trials for USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) after integrating the Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic system.

1. NNS Charleston Operations Hits First Anniversary with Production Milestones

HII celebrated the one-year anniversary of its Newport News Shipbuilding Charleston Operations in Goose Creek, South Carolina, marking a successful ramp-up since the January 2025 asset acquisition closing. During 2025, the facility delivered its first module within 40 days and exceeded production targets by completing 12 submarine hull blocks and five carrier structural units, representing a 15% overrun relative to initial forecasts. Occupying 480,000 square feet on 45 acres along the Cooper River, the site benefits from barge and rail access and has room to expand by up to 30% to meet growing Navy demand. HII has invested $75 million in new tooling and workforce development, increasing the local skilled- trades headcount by 20% to support future attack submarine and carrier builds under its distributed shipbuilding initiative.

2. Ingalls Shipbuilding Completes Sea Trials on Zumwalt Modernization

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division completed builder’s sea trials for USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) following an extensive modernization that integrated the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system, making it the Navy’s first warship capable of hypersonic strike. The destroyer arrived at Ingalls in August 2023 and was undocked in December 2024 after replacing its twin 155 mm Advanced Gun Systems with eight vertical missile launch tubes. The trials encompassed propulsion, navigation and weapons-handling tests over a 10-day period, confirming CPS system readiness and electric-drive performance at speeds exceeding 30 knots. Sister ships USS Michael Monsoor and USS Lyndon B. Johnson are scheduled for CPS integration in 2026 and 2027, positioning HII to capture a projected $1.8 billion in follow-on modernization contracts over the next five years.
