HII Marks 25th Anniversary of REMUS UUVs with Babcock Partnership and $1.5T Budget Boost
HII celebrates 25th anniversary of its REMUS UUV family with 750+ units delivered to over 30 navies and a 90% active-service rate; HII partners with Babcock International on autonomous submarine torpedo launches. A proposed 44% defense budget boost to $1.5 trillion for 2027 could expand Navy orders for unmanned systems.
1. REMUS UUV Family Celebrates 25 Years
HII marked the 25th anniversary of its REMUS unmanned underwater vehicle family at the 2026 Sea-Air-Space Exposition, highlighting innovation and reliability over a quarter century. The platform has seen more than 750 deliveries to over 30 navies, spanning NATO and Indo-Pacific partners, with a 90% active-service rate and variants from shallow-water REMUS 130 to deep-sea REMUS 6000 offering up to 110-hour endurance.
2. Partnership Enables Autonomous Submarine Launch
HII and Babcock International Group signed a strategic agreement to integrate REMUS UUVs with Babcock’s submarine weapon handling and launch systems. This deal enables autonomous deployment and recovery of UUVs through torpedo tubes on Virginia-class submarines, enhancing stealth, mission reach and joint operational flexibility for allied forces.
3. Defense Budget Increase Bolsters Procurement
The U.S. defense budget proposal for 2027 calls for a 44% spending increase to $1.5 trillion, signaling expanded procurement potential for naval unmanned systems. Higher funding levels could accelerate contracts for REMUS platforms, support next-generation development and strengthen HII’s order backlog in its Mission Technologies division.
