Hippo report shows 22% of homeowners still carry debt from weather damage repairs
HIPO•Hippo Holdings’ 2026 Extreme Weather Report found that 22% of homeowners who paid out of pocket for weather-related repairs still carry debt, and 71% of that group has held it for at least two years.
1. Repair costs leave debt
A survey of 1,047 U.S. homeowners found nearly 60% had experienced weather damage in the previous three years, and half paid for repairs out of pocket. Of those who paid out of pocket, 22% still carry repair-related debt; 71% of that group has held the debt for at least two years.
2. Savings and coverage gaps
Nearly 80% said they lack savings or the ability to make repairs themselves if unexpected weather damage occurs, while 34% said such a repair would cause significant stress. The report also found 39% mistakenly believed damage was covered, and 19% paid out of pocket as a result.
