Hirtle Callaghan warns AI spending boom masks financing risks
QQQ•Hirtle Callaghan warned in its third-quarter 2026 investment outlook that AI financing structures can obscure risks as sponsors limit their downside exposure. It cited estimates that AI services would need to reach $1.05 trillion in sales in 2028 and $6 trillion globally by 2031 to support planned infrastructure investment.
1. Financing risks
Hirtle Callaghan said AI financing structures obscure risks while sponsors limit their downside exposure. Oracle’s credit default swaps rose from 195 to 263 basis points following reports of payment obligations tied to an undelivered data center.
2. Investment estimates
The outlook cited Nvidia’s $500 billion compute financing platform, which includes $125 billion in residual value support for lenders. It also cited Goldman Sachs estimates that AI-service resellers would need $1.05 trillion in 2028 sales to support infrastructure investment returns.
3. Longer-term market target
With construction extending beyond that horizon, Bain Capital estimated the global AI-services market must reach $6 trillion by 2031 to cover planned builds.
