HSS study flags calcium channel blockers as potential drug target for lumbar spinal stenosis

HSS researchers reported Sept. 7 Cell results on a tendon-ligament stem cell tied to lumbar spinal stenosis.

Findings were already presented via publication, not a clinical trial readout.

Stenosis-linked cells appeared overactive, driving ligament thickening that can narrow the spinal canal and worsen walking-limiting symptoms.

Preclinical work suggested calcium channel blockers, used for hypertension, could be repurposed to curb the overgrowth.

Clinical studies are planned to test that approach, setting up a potential non-surgical treatment path with clear commercial repurposing implications.
