'I Play Rocky' tells the underdog story behind the classic underdog film
AMZN•“I Play Rocky,” a film about Sylvester Stallone’s fight to star in and make the 1976 film “Rocky,” opens in theaters on Friday. Anthony Ippolito plays Stallone; Stallone blessed the script and casting but was not involved in production.
1. A fight to make Rocky
“I Play Rocky” chronicles Stallone’s early years as a struggling actor and his effort to sell a script about boxer Rocky Balboa while insisting he play the lead. He turned down large sums to sell the script without the role, and the filmmakers later faced a tight budget and production challenges.
2. Stallone blessed the film
Anthony Ippolito plays Stallone, and director Peter Farrelly said Ippolito embodied him rather than simply imitating him. Stallone was not involved in production, but he approved the script and casting and gave input to AnnaSophia Robb, who plays his first wife, Sasha. Amazon MGM Studios is releasing the film in theaters on Friday.
