India, US have reached a plateau in trade talks, finance minister says
INDA•India and the United States have reached a plateau in trade deal talks, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, adding that making further concessions would be “very, very difficult” for both countries. The negotiations are ongoing, she said.
1. Talks hit a plateau
Sitharaman said India and the United States had reached a plateau in trade deal talks and that giving or taking more beyond it would be “very, very difficult” for both countries. She said both sides could act if there was room to do so, and described the negotiations as ongoing.
2. Trade balance at issue
The countries have been negotiating a trade agreement since February 2025 to deepen economic ties and address long-standing market access issues. Sitharaman said the trade balance favored India and that Washington had a deficit it wanted to reduce.
