Indian bonds rally most since April as oil slides after US midterm verdict
TLT•Indian government bonds rallied the most since early April on Wednesday, with the benchmark 2036 bond yield falling more than 11 basis points to 7.1880%. Brent crude fell 1.4% to $102.20 a barrel, easing pressure on inflation and India’s fiscal outlook.
1. Bonds rally as oil falls
The benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond yield dropped more than 11 basis points to 7.1880%, extending its three-day decline to about 22 basis points. Bond prices move inversely to yields. Brent crude fell 1.4% to $102.20 a barrel after reaching $117 last week.
2. Rates and inflation outlook
Lower oil prices eased pressure on inflation, the current account and India’s fiscal outlook. US Treasury yields softened, and the dollar index fell 0.6%, boosting the Indian rupee. Traders said oil remains the pivotal macro trigger for Indian markets, and a sustained decline could allow the central bank to limit further tightening.
3. Market watches mediation
The Reserve Bank of India expects inflation to peak at 6% in the October-December quarter, based on crude averaging $95 a barrel in the second half of 2026-27, after raising its repo rate and turning hawkish in October. Markets are also tracking Qatar-led mediation efforts; a private-bank trader said credible de-escalation could deepen the oil slide and extend the bond rally. One-year, two-year and five-year overnight indexed swap rates fell 13, 17 and 14.25 basis points, respectively.
