India's AM Green targets full offtake for giant green ammonia plant by mid-2027
UNP•AM Green Ammonia expects to secure buyers by mid-2027 for the 1 million metric tons of annual green ammonia it aims to produce in southern India. Its Kakinada facility is expected to start production in early 2028, while Uniper has agreed to buy up to 500,000 tons per year.
1. Offtake and production plans
AM Green Ammonia expects to secure buyers by mid-2027 for the 1 million metric tons per year it aims to produce at its Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, facility, chief executive Gautam Reddy Kumbam said. Production is expected to begin in early 2028, reach 500,000 tons by mid-2028 and rise to 1 million tonnes by March 2029.
2. Export market
Germany's Uniper has signed a deal to buy up to 500,000 tons per year. AM Green's entire production is earmarked for export markets. Kumbam said demand for green fuels strengthened in 2026 in Japan, South Korea and Europe.
3. Green ammonia context
Green ammonia is produced using green hydrogen generated from renewable energy and is viewed as an export fuel and feedstock for decarbonising refining, shipping, power generation and fertilisers. India is targeting annual production of 5 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030. AM Green is backed by AM Green, Gentari, GIC and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.
