International politicians react to Democrats winning US midterms
SPY•Politicians and governments around the world reacted to Democrats winning the US midterms, a result that could have major implications for global trade, security and energy prices.
1. Reactions from leaders
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said American voters had rejected policies he described as impoverishing and hostile to climate action. Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called the result a powerful political signal and said some emerging US political voices were closer to Norway on climate, foreign policy and development aid.
2. Foreign policy responses
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it would continue to deepen cooperation with the United States in security, trade, technology and education. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the results would introduce a new era in world relations, while Japan’s chief cabinet secretary said the Japan-US alliance remained essential to Japan’s foreign and security policy.
3. Other responses
A European Parliament vice president said the result could benefit support for Ukraine, the green transition and relations with the rest of the world. Greece’s government spokesman said Greek-American relations would remain strong, while Russia’s deputy foreign minister said Moscow’s policy would not depend on political changes in other countries.
