Iran awaits U.S. move after Trump reportedly rejects peace plan
USO•Iran is awaiting an official U.S. response to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end regional fighting within seven days. Trump reportedly rejected the proposal, which Iran sent through Qatari mediators, but the report could not be immediately confirmed.
1. Iran’s proposal
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the proposal would start a seven-day countdown to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and pausing regional fighting. Iran says it would also halt hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, and would require the United States to lift its blockade on Iranian ports, release frozen Iranian funds and waive oil sanctions.
2. Nuclear talks remain disputed
Araqchi said wider talks could begin on mutually agreed subjects if the United States accepted the proposal. A senior Iranian official said Iran would not be flexible on its nuclear program or concede its rights, including uranium enrichment and keeping its highly enriched uranium in the country.
3. Saudi defenses on alert
Iran’s foreign ministry said Araqchi briefed his Saudi counterpart on an understanding with Oman about safe shipping routes in the strait. Yemen’s Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted two Houthi drones headed toward Riyadh and a ballistic missile aimed at Khamis Mushait. Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials also met to discuss security and military cooperation.
