Iran insists on diplomatic solution after Trump rejects peace plan
USO•Iran said diplomacy is the only way to resolve its conflict with the United States and Israel after Trump rejected Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting. Iran said reopening the strait depends on agreed conditions; Houthi authorities said a strike on a market in Yemen killed seven people.
1. Iran calls for negotiations
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on Iran’s conditions being met and that only a negotiated solution can resolve the deadlock. Trump said he rejected Iran’s proposal, which Tehran announced last week at the UN General Assembly and transmitted to the United States through Qatari mediators. Araqchi said mediators had not officially conveyed a US rejection and that Iran was waiting for their definitive views.
2. Proposal and nuclear programme
Araqchi said the proposal would start a seven-day countdown to reopening the strait and pause regional fighting, after which the parties could begin wider talks on mutually agreed subjects. A senior Iranian official said Tehran would make no concessions on its nuclear programme, including uranium enrichment or shipping highly enriched uranium out of the country. President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was ready for talks but would not accept bullying or coercion.
3. Strike reported in Yemen
Houthi authorities said seven people were killed and 40 wounded, including children, in a strike on shops at a market in Taiz province. Yemen’s internationally recognised government later said its forces had targeted a Houthi military camp and vehicles at the same junction.
