Iran, Qatari mediators hold third day of talks to end US-Iran war
USO•Iranian negotiators and Qatari mediators held a third consecutive day of talks in Doha on Sunday, seeking a deal to end the US-Israeli war on Iran. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said discussions on a two-day proposal continued without a final conclusion.
1. Talks continue in Doha
Iranian negotiators were in Doha on Sunday for a third consecutive day of talks with Qatari mediators aimed at reaching a deal to end the US-Israeli war on Iran, an official briefed on the discussions said. The talks followed discussions in Tehran on Friday and moved to Doha on Saturday, with regular contacts with Washington coordinating them, the official said.
2. Proposal remains unresolved
Araqchi described the talks as “ongoing and progressing” and said Tehran was prepared for “both defence and diplomacy.” He said discussions on a “two-day proposal” were continuing but no final conclusion had been reached. The proposal would reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days of a potential agreement with Washington.
3. Risk of renewed conflict
The talks come amid concerns the conflict could escalate after the November 3 US midterm elections. President Donald Trump said the United States would not launch new attacks before the vote and that talks had been productive, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Trump had not decided whether to launch further strikes. Iran has said it would respond to new attacks by striking US and Israeli targets in neighbouring countries; the eight-month-old war has disrupted global oil supplies and spread across the Middle East.
